We at SAKKI want to make the Finnish vocational education the best in the world. The idea of a tool that would help us reach our dream was born by accident. An unofficial evening with our Dutch sister organisation JOB gave birth to the idea of the largest study ever produced, carried out by the students themselves. A study that would help us produce reliable and varied data on the everyday life of vocational students, as well as the quality of the vocational education, for free use by everyone. The idea of the VET Student Survey was born.

This survey, which is currently being carried out for the first time, will be repeated every two years. With the help of the network of experts brought together by SAKKI we have created an extensive and varied survey, which will be carried out with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture in all vocational institutions in Finland. Our aim is that every vocational student in Finland will fill out this online survey.

FAQ

What is the VET Student Survey?

The VET Student Survey is Finland's largest and most extensive data acquisition project on the country's vocational students. The survey, which will be carried out every two years, will be sent out to all vocational institutions in Finland with the help of the Ministry of Education and Culture. All young students studying towards a vocational qualification are asked to participate in the survey.

We are collecting data in order to create approaches for many of the challenges that the vocational education is facing, as well as to bring the views of vocational students into the public debate.

Who is creating and carrying out the VET Student Survey?

The VET Student Survey project is carried out by the National Union of Vocational Students in Finland – SAKKI ry and the Research Foundation for Studies and Education Otus, and it is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the National Board of Education. The idea for the project was created by SAKKI, who also started the project. SAKKI is also in charge of making sure that the vocational students' voice is heard throughout the project. OTUS is in charge of the content and the technical execution of the data acquisition.

The study is financed by SAKKI ry, OTUS and the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Why is the VET Student Survey being carried out?

The VET Student Survey was created to produce extensive and varied data on vocational students in Finland. The results from the survey will be used to fill the information gap on the everyday lives of young people, from education to housing and social issues.

By producing data on vocational students we will improve vocational education and also promote the vocational students' cause. The survey is the vocational students' voice in the ongoing educational debate.

Who has created the survey?

Researchers from the Research Foundation for Studies and Education (OTUS) have been in charge of creating the questions, together with representatives from the National Union of Vocational Students in Finland – SAKKI ry. While creating the questions, the help and expertise of a steering group consisting of experts in the field, as well as a wider network of other experts, has also been used.

Who is the VET Student Survey aimed at?

We hope that all young vocational students will participate in the VET Student Survey. In its first year, all vocational students enrolled in youth programs in all of Finland's vocational institutions will be invited to take part in the VET Student Survey. During the following rounds, the plan is to extend the survey to also include mature students and those carrying out demonstrations of competence and apprenticeships.

The results and material of the study will be shared openly on the VET Student Survey website, and they are free to use by e.g. the media, researchers or individual institutions.

How and when will the VET Student Survey be carried out?

The VET Student Survey is carried out online in all vocational institutions in January-February 2015. The material will be published for free use on the VET Student Survey website in the autumn of 2015. At the same time, a compact report on the most noteworthy findings of the study will also be published.
